What can you expect
Preparation
(This test will take up to 30 minutes)
To get ready for the test, please make sure to:
- Avoid heavy meals: Please don’t eat a large meal within 2 hours before the test.
- Dress comfortably: Wear comfy shoes and two-piece clothing for walking on the treadmill.
- Manage your medication: You might need to stop taking certain heart and blood pressure medications before the test.
Medications to stop 48 hours before the test: Unless your referring doctor has told you otherwise, please stop taking these medications 48 hours before the test:
- Beta-blockers (These drugs lower blood pressure, regulate heart rate and improve heart function)
- Generic names: Atenolol, Bisoprolol, Carvedilol, Ivabradine, Labetolol, Metoprolol, Nebivolol, Oxprenolol, Pindolol, Propanolol & Sotalol
- Brand names: Anselol, Atehexal, Felodipine, Noten, Tenormin, Bicor, Dilatrend, Kredex, Tambacor, Coralan, Presolol, Trandate, Betaloc, Lopresor, Metohexal, Metolol, Metrol, Minax, Toprol-XL, Nebilate, Corbeton, Barbloc, Visken, Deralin, Inderal, Cardol, Solavert, Sotab, Sotacor & Sotahexal

Please stop the above medications UNLESS your referring doctor has told you otherwise. If you are unsure, you may ask your referring doctor and then let us know. Please ask them and then let us know.
Patients are not permitted to bring visitors into the appointment room. This includes family, children, guardians, friends and/or carers. Language interpreters are permitted to accompany the patient to the appointment room.

- Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything for 1 hour before the test.
- Avoid Caffeine: Refrain from consuming caffeine 24 hours prior to the test.
Certain medications, specifically Beta blockers and Calcium channel blockers, must be stopped 48 hours before the test. These medications are typically prescribed for heart conditions and high blood pressure.

Note: Only stop these medications if it is safe to do so. Consult your referring doctor for advice, and inform us of any changes.
Important Information to Share with Your Doctor- Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, suspect you might be, or if you are breastfeeding. Dobutamine may affect the fetus and can pass into breast milk.
- Allergies: Notify your doctor about any allergies or sensitivities, especially to medications or latex.
Cost and Rebate Information
- Cost: The dobutamine stress echo is privately billed at $525.
- Rebate: A rebate is available for eligible patients, reducing the out-of-pocket expense to $36.80.

To prepare for the test, follow these guidelines:
- For males, be aware that the technician may need to shave some hair on your chest to ensure the electrodes stick properly to the skin.
- For females, it is advisable to wear two-piece clothing so that the top half can be easily removed during the test. This will facilitate the electrode placement and examination process.
No other preparation is required.

Before you come in for your 24 Hour ECG Holter Monitor test, there are a few steps you can take to prepare:
- Personal Hygiene: Make sure you shower or bathe before coming in for your appointment. You won’t be able to shower while you’re wearing the monitor for the next 24 hours.
- Consideration for Men: For men, please note that it might be necessary to shave some hair on your chest. This is to ensure that the electrodes for the monitor can stick to your skin properly.
- Security Deposit: Lastly, please bring a $50 security deposit with you to your appointment. You can pay this in cash or on a card. This is just in case the monitor is returned late or damaged. Rest assured, your deposit will be refunded to you after 24 hours, once the monitor is returned in good condition.

To ensure you’re prepared for the 24-hour BP monitoring test, please note the following instructions:
- Billing Information: This test is not covered by Medicare, meaning you’ll be responsible for the costs. The fee for a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor is $100 for private billing.
- Showering: While the blood pressure monitor is attached, you won’t be able to shower for 24 hours, so plan your personal hygiene routine accordingly. We advise you shower before your appointment.
- Security Deposit: Please bring a $50 security deposit, either in cash or card. This is a precautionary measure in case the monitor is returned late or damaged. After the monitor is returned in good condition within the 24-hour period, this deposit will be refunded to you.

Preparing for an ECG Test:
- Shaving if Necessary: For males, there may be a need to shave some hair on your chest. This is to ensure that the electrodes, which are used to capture the electrical activity of your heart, stick properly to your skin.
- Appropriate Clothing: For females, it is recommended to wear two-piece clothing. The top part of your clothing will need to be removed easily to allow for the placement of electrodes. This is why a two-piece outfit can be more convenient and comfortable for this particular test.
